※ちなみにdev-libs/lzo-2.02-r1は高速な可逆圧縮するライブラリです。解凍も高速ならストリーミング解凍なんてできるのかな？

• mplayerは日本語ヘルプが入っていないみたいで、ビルドのときエラーになります。とりあえずLINGUAS="" emerge -u mplayer で個別にアップデートしました。ちなみにmake.confにLINGUAS=が無いひとは必要ありません。
  
• slocate-2.7-r8はグループ名が変更されているようなので事前に[groupmod -n locate slocate]しておきましょう。

※はまりました。mysql-4.1.14まではなんの変化も無かったのですがただリリースバージョンが上がっただけなのに文字化けです。
もともとMySQLの文字コードがlatin1で作成したのがいけないのか？

MySQLのユーザがスパーユーザ権限をもってるとinit-connectは無視されます。
